Enhancing community resilience
to climate change.

DESCRIPTION

LRI aims to strengthen underserved rural communities response to climate change by creating a strategic and coordinated approach involving communities and experts to assess the magnitude of current and future risks namely soil erosion and landslides triggered by climate change and to propose and implement actions, helping communities to adapt to it.

LRI CRITERIA FOR CLIMATE CHANGE SITE SELECTION

  • Preferably located on one of the three biocorridors (North, West Beqaa and Chouf)
  • Site located on public land, undergoing severe erosion or land movement
  • At least partially plantable
  • Current status of site presents a risk on neighboring social and economic assets
  • Interested/active local community
  • Site accessible

objectives

  • Classifying the current and future environmental and economic risks on communities assets in order to address it;
  • Proposing measures for current and future actions to be taken through experts and stakeholders engagement;
  • Implementing adaption measures hand in hand with the communities to raise their resilience to the current and future threats; and
  • Developing guidelines to help stakeholders replicate the process in other communities and raise awareness on climate change implications on communities’ livelihoods.

Informative meeting in Mhaidthe

Mhaidthe, February 20, 2016 - The Lebanon Reforestation Initiative (LRI), a program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the United States Forest Service (USFS), and in collaboration with the Municipality of Mhaidthe organized an informative meeting aiming to strengthen El Mhaidthe community’s resilience to climate change. The meeting was attended by El Mhaidthe head of Municipality, mayor, and 25 members of the local community. The meeting started with a general introduction of the LRI project and a more specific introduction of the “Resilience to Climate Change” activities proposed to be implemented on the public land of El Mhaidthe that include between others, an environmental assessment of the current and future condition of soil erosion in the land as well as adaptation measures to be agreed on and implemented with the community participation. The introduction was followed by a discussion with the local community on the proposed process and her interest in working together on its implementation. Overall, the meeting was successful and the local community showed interest in pursuing this activity. The work will start in March and will continue till June 2018.
